Kitchen Photos

Favorite times in the kitchen are lazy weekend mornings filled with the sizzle and smell of bacon frying. During times like that,
I always think "Now THIS is how a farm house is SUPPOSED to smell!

I don't think there is any way to describe how dirty the kitchen was. And it was ugly. Wood paneling, linoleum floors, outdated wallpaper. And it only got uglier. Clean and pretty. We managed to salvage the old cabinets. We installed new countertops, added the island and installed new appliances. My favorite kitchen feature is the big window. We have a great view of the barn and fields.

The Destruction Continues

Sealing up the Door

Final Touches

The right side of the kitchen had a doorway to a small laundry room. We closed up the doorway to the laundry room, tore out the wall and made one huge bathroom. No more doorway! Shawn's dad puts the final piece of trim in the corner.

When we pried the wood paneling off in the kitchen, we discovered that the built-in china cabinet in the dining room was actually two-sided. This side opens up to the kitchen. After dishes were washed, they could be put back in the china cabinet from the kitchen side and when it was time for a meal, they could be retrieved from the dining room side. We took the doors off of the back side of the china cabinet so we could sand them and refinish them. We found license plates from 1919 in the bottom of the cabinet. Click here to read the journal from that day and to see photos of the license plates. This is after the doors were stripped and refinished. I have not yet found hardward that I love for the drawers. I need to hit a couple of restoration places to find some antique pulls and knobs.

Finding the Kitchen Floor

Sanding the Kitchen Door

The Kitchen Door refinished
and the New Old Pie Safe!

There were two layers of flooring on top of the original 100 year old floor. We hammered, pried, pulled, and grumbled a few choice words until everything was pulled up - then we sanded and refinished the original floor. We stripped two coats of paint off this door before we could sand it. It was a big old pain in the rear which is why Bill is enjoying a beer. This picture shows the kitchen door we refinished. As you can see, it was worth the work. Bill surprised me one day with this beautiful antique piece. The bottom of the cabinet has screened holes in the sides indicating that it was likely used for a pie safe!
